When I first started wearing thongs, I definitely wasn’t comfortable with them right away.
In fact, the first time I wore a thong out in public, I was extremely self-conscious. There was something exciting (and honestly, a little arousing) about wearing something with so little coverage. At the same time, though, I couldn’t stop thinking about it.
I kept wondering whether people could tell I was wearing a thong.
Could they see the outline? Did my clothes look different? Was someone going to somehow know what I was wearing underneath them?
Looking back, I realize that most of the anxiety was in my own head. But when you’re new to wearing a thong, it’s easy to become hyper-aware of what’s underneath your clothes.
How Long Does It Take to Get Used to Wearing a Thong?
For me, getting used to wearing a thong took several months. It wasn’t something that happened overnight. The physical comfort improved fairly quickly, but getting past the mental part took much longer.
When I first started wearing thongs, I was constantly aware of them. I’d be walking around, sitting at my desk, shopping, or running errands, and there would always be that little voice in the back of my head reminding me that I was wearing a thong.
I was especially conscious of it when I was out in public. That eventually changed. The more regularly I wore thongs, the less I noticed them. Eventually, wearing one became just another part of getting dressed.
At First, I Thought Everyone Could Tell
One of my biggest worries when I started wearing thongs was that other people would somehow know.
I used to constantly wonder whether people could tell what I was wearing. I’d think about it throughout the day and sometimes even adjust my clothes because I was worried the thong might be visible.
One evening stands out in particular.
An old girlfriend insisted that I wear her thong panties while we went out on the town. I was already somewhat self-conscious about wearing a thong, and wearing a pair of women’s thong panties made me even more aware of what I had on underneath my clothes.
At the same time, there was something incredibly exciting about it.
I knew that almost nobody around me had any idea what I was wearing. I was walking around in public dressed normally while secretly wearing something much more revealing underneath.
That combination of nervousness, excitement and curiosity was a big part of what made wearing a thong so memorable when I was first getting started.
Eventually, though, I stopped worrying so much about whether people could tell.
I wrote more about that transition in Can People Tell If You’re Wearing a Thong?, but the short version is that I eventually realized I was thinking about it far more than anyone else possibly could have been.
The More I Wore Thongs, the More Comfortable They Became
The biggest change came simply from wearing them regularly. The more I wore thongs, the less I noticed them.
At first, I was aware of the waistband, the pouch, the rear strap and the minimal coverage. Eventually, those sensations became familiar.
Once something becomes familiar, your brain tends to stop paying attention to it. That’s exactly what happened with thongs.
I could put one on in the morning, get dressed and go about my day without giving much thought to what I was wearing underneath my clothes.
That was a major turning point for me.
Instead of thinking, I’m wearing a thong, I eventually just thought, I’m wearing underwear.
The Quality of Men’s Thongs Has Improved
Another factor that has made getting comfortable with thongs easier is the improvement in the quality of men’s thong underwear.
The fit and materials available today are much better than some of the options I’ve tried in the past.
A good thong shouldn’t require constant adjusting. The pouch should fit properly, the waistband should be comfortable and the fabric should feel good against your skin.
Finding the right combination of size, fit, material and style can make a huge difference.
I’ve also found that different thong styles can feel dramatically different. A narrow G-string, for example, can feel quite different from a fuller tanga-style thong.
If you’re new to thongs, I think it’s worth trying different styles rather than assuming that the first one you buy represents what wearing a thong is always going to feel like.
Sleeping in a Thong Helped Me Get Used to It
Sleeping in thongs was another important part of my transition.
When I first started sleeping in a thong, I was extremely aware of it. I would lie in bed and think about the minimal coverage and the sensation of the fabric.
It could even be distracting enough to make falling asleep difficult. The more I slept in thongs, however, the more normal they became. Eventually, I actually came to prefer sleeping in a thong.
For me, there’s something incredibly comfortable about the minimal coverage. It feels almost like sleeping naked, while still providing enough coverage that I can get up and walk around the house if I need to.
I wrote more about this in Why I Sleep in Thongs, but sleeping in a thong regularly played a surprisingly large role in helping me get completely comfortable with them.
It Took Months to Stop Thinking About My Underwear
If you’re wondering how long it takes to get used to wearing a thong, my answer would be: give yourself time. It took me several months before I reached the point where I wasn’t constantly thinking about my thong.
The physical adjustment happened first, but the psychological adjustment took longer.
At first, the thong was something I was doing. Eventually, it simply became something I wore.
That distinction might sound minor, but it made a huge difference.
Once I stopped thinking about wearing a thong as something unusual, I could finally appreciate how comfortable it could actually be.
It Took Even Longer to Sleep in Only a Thong Without Thinking About It
Getting comfortable wearing a thong during the day was one thing. Getting comfortable sleeping in only a thong took even longer.
For several months, going to bed wearing only a thong still felt like a big deal to me.
I was too aware of how little I was wearing, and sometimes I found the sensation arousing enough that it actually made it harder to fall asleep.
Eventually, that changed too.
After sleeping in thongs regularly, I stopped thinking about them so much. The thong became part of my normal bedtime routine rather than something unusual.
Now, wearing only a thong to bed feels completely natural to me.
That’s something I never would have expected when I first started.
I Still Get Self-Conscious Around My Wife
Interestingly, there’s one situation where I still feel somewhat self-conscious wearing only a thong: around my wife, but that’s a very different kind of self-consciousness.
I know how much she loves seeing me in a thong, so I’m very aware that she’s looking at me and appreciating what I’m wearing.
Instead of making me uncomfortable, though, that makes it fun.
There’s still a little bit of that excitement I felt when I first started wearing thongs. The difference is that now I’m much more comfortable with the thong itself.
The self-consciousness has become part of the appeal rather than something I want to get rid of.
So, How Long Does It Really Take?
For me, it took several months to really get used to wearing a thong.
The timeline probably varies from person to person, but my experience looked roughly like this:
First few wears: I noticed the thong constantly.
First few weeks: It became more physically comfortable, but I was still very self-conscious.
After a couple of months: I started forgetting about it during the day.
After several months: Wearing a thong became completely routine, including sleeping in one.
The biggest factor wasn’t forcing myself to become comfortable. It was simply wearing thongs regularly enough that my brain eventually stopped treating them as something unusual.
Give Yourself Time
If you’re thinking about trying a thong and you’re worried that it feels strange at first, don’t assume that means you won’t like it.
Getting comfortable wearing a thong can take time.
For me, the first stage was exciting and arousing, but also incredibly self-conscious. I worried about whether people could tell and thought about my underwear far more than I needed to.
Then I kept wearing them.
Eventually, the self-consciousness faded. The fit became familiar. I found styles and materials that worked for me. I started sleeping in thongs. And eventually, I realized that I could go through an entire day without thinking about my underwear at all.
That’s when a thong stopped feeling like something unusual and started feeling like normal underwear.
And honestly, that’s probably the biggest sign that you’ve gotten used to wearing one.
